Our #BORNATDAWNMUSE this week is the one and only Beyoncé. Born in 1981, she was raised in Houston, Texas by mother Tina, a hairdresser and salon owner and father Mathew, a Xerox sales manager.
A gifted child singer and dancer, she began her career in Destiny’s Child. Despite lineup changes and lawsuits which led Beyoncé to experience depression, the group achieved global success.
The release of 2003’s multiplatinum album ‘Dangerous in Love’ established Beyoncé as a major solo artist. Her career success is unparalleled - 100 million records sold worldwide, 22 Grammys and all 6 studio albums reaching No.1 in the US.
Her personal life often eclipses these achievements. The relationship with her father is reportedly complex; he briefly left when she was a baby, fathered another child while still married to Tina and in 2010, a court ruled he had been stealing from the ‘I Am.’.. Tour. In 2011 he was dropped as her manager.
In 2008, Beyoncé married Jay-Z in a private ceremony and in 2012 daughter Blue Ivy was born. Her sister Solange famously attacked the rapper in a hotel lift in 2014. Media frenzy speculated his infidelity was the cause, with divorce imminent.
Beyoncé has always retained a dignified silence…then came ‘Lemonade’. The 2017 visual album laid bare her personal anguish over Jay-Z’s infidelity and father issues. Its cinematic videos not only served incredible fashion, but garnered attention for politicised lyrics and imagery on everything from black power to Hurricane Katrina.
Beyoncé is a fashion icon. Whether in leotard for ‘Single Ladies’ or wearing personalised Gucci and Chanel for the ‘Formation’ video, she favours a streamlined, high-fashion look, exhibited to her 111m Instagram followers.
An activist, philanthropist and campaigner, she identifies as a feminist and has condemned police brutality against black Americans. In 2005 she founded the Survivor Foundation to provide housing for Katrina victims.
Beyoncé is an unstoppable force. Defined as ‘the most important and compelling musician of the 21st century’, it’s impossible to choose her strongest performance, song or most striking look. All her moments are definitive.
