BORN AT DAWN MUSE: LAUREN HUTTON

This week’s #BORNATDAWNMUSE is American model and actress Lauren Hutton. Born in 1943 in South Carolina, she grew up with her mother, but sadly without knowing her father as he left them when she was young. After University, she relocated to NYC and worked as a cocktail waitress at the legendary Playboy Club alongside Debbie Harry.

In 1968, Lauren made her film debut in ‘Paper Lion’ and began modelling with Ford Models to earn money to travel. Despite being advised to conceal her infamous tooth gap, she retained this ‘imperfection’ and later appeared in a Chanel No 5 advert shot by Richard Avedon.

In 1973, aged 30, she signed a landmark contract with Revlon and became a ‘cover girl’, appearing on the cover of Vogue a record 26 times. Despite being dropped by Revlon in 1983, deemed too old to sell makeup, Lauren continued to model through the decades.

A modern muse, she has featured in high profile campaigns for influential brands like The Row and Alexander Wang. In 2016, she walked the runway for Bottega Veneta, becoming the face of their SS17 campaign. She appeared on the cover of Vogue Italia in October 2017 aged 73.

Lauren is renowned for a classic, elegant all-American look. Her distinct style is accessible but unique with light sportswear looks wide-leg trousers with navy blazers and a love for denim. Whether in pastel-toned Halston for the 1975 Oscars or a white over-sized button shirt, she makes simplicity beautiful.

She is a known risk taker and in 2000 tragedy hit when she had a horrific crash and almost died when she was taking part in a 100-mile motorcycle ride. A notable trailblazer in her work too, her status as the first $1 million-a-year model helped increase model’s pay across the board.

Now 74, she champions age diversity and is an environmental activist. She continues to model and act and is an avid reader and traveler.

Lauren is a timeless icon; intelligent and stylish with a renegade spirit who lives life to the full. She remains one of the most enduring models of our time.
